Grové Schoombee Foundation raises over R1.8 million

Grové Schoombee Foundation raises over R1.8 million for vulnerable children at Pretoria Gala Fundraiser

Pretoria, South Africa – A quintessential highveld thunderstorm and the rainbow that followed, served as an apt harbinger of the resounding success of a fundraising event held by the Grové Schoombee Foundation on Saturday 17 February 2024, at 10th Floor by Summit, Menlyn Pretoria. The charity dinner and auction, attended by more than 200 guests, including local celebrities and notable figures from across the country, raised in excess of R1.8 million in support of the Daybreak House for Babies and more Palliative Patient Care rooms at State Hospitals for children diagnosed with cancer.

The highlight of the evening was a charity auction that featured an array of incredible items, including art pieces, sculptures, luxury holiday packages, rare wine collections, and high-end luxury items. The auction captivated the audience, with the highest bid of R250,000 for a week-long stay at a luxury villa in the Seychelles. The event was made even more special with the auctioneer, who shared his personal connection to the cause, having been abandoned as a child himself.

The Grové Schoombee Foundation, founded in 2022 by three mothers united by the loss of Grové Schoombee and a shared mission to offer hope and support to children in need, has dedicated itself to various initiatives including the establishment of Daybreak House. This safe haven provides a loving home for abandoned, neglected, and vulnerable babies, ensuring they receive the care and support needed until they find permanent families.

In addition to supporting Daybreak House, the foundation has contributed to the creation of a palliative cancer patient room at the paediatric cancer ward of a state Hospital. Looking ahead, the foundation aims to raise funds for more palliative patient rooms  within state hospitals to support the families and needs of children undergoing cancer treatment, ensuring they have a safe place to make memories, receive pain management and much needed therapy, despite their medical challenges.

“We are overwhelmed by the generosity and support shown by everyone who attended and contributed to the success of our fundraiser,” said Suliztha van der Walt, spokesperson for the Grové Schoombee Foundation. “Thanks to your kindness, we can continue to make a significant difference in the lives of these children, providing them with the care, love, and opportunities they deserve.”

The Grové Schoombee Foundation extends its heartfelt gratitude to all the donors, sponsors, and volunteers who made this event possible. The funds raised will go a long way in supporting the ongoing needs of Daybreak House and the development of the Palliative Patient Care rooms project at State Hospitals, reaffirming the foundation’s commitment to nurturing and protecting the future of South Africa’s children.
